Average: 60-74%
Good: 75-89%
Excellent: ≥90%

Academic Impact

Final grades affect GPA, scholarship eligibility, and academic standing.

How This Tool Works

This calculator determines the grade you need on your final exam to achieve your desired overall course grade. The calculation is based on your current grade and the weight of the final exam.

The Formula

Required Final Grade = (Desired Grade - (Current Grade × (100% - Final Weight))) / Final Weight

Where:

  • Current Grade: Your current grade in the course (as a percentage)
  • Desired Grade: The overall grade you wish to achieve (as a percentage)
  • Final Weight: The weight of the final exam as a percentage of your overall grade

Example Calculation

If your current grade is 85%, you want a 90% in the course, and the final exam is worth 30% of your grade:

Required = (90 - (85 × (100% - 30%))) / 30% = (90 - (85 × 0.7)) / 0.3 = (90 - 59.5) / 0.3 = 30.5 / 0.3 = 101.67%

In this case, it would be impossible to achieve a 90% because the required grade exceeds 100%.

Standard Grading Scale

This calculator uses the following grading scale:

Grade Category Percentage Range Description
A / Excellent 90-100% Outstanding performance
B / Good 80-89% Above average performance
C / Average 70-79% Satisfactory performance
D / Low 60-69% Minimal passing performance
F / Fail 0-59% Failing performance

Important Considerations

While this calculator provides an accurate mathematical result, keep in mind:

  • Different institutions may use different grading scales
  • Some courses may have minimum grade requirements for passing
  • Final grades may be curved in some classes
  • Your professor may have specific grading policies
  • Always consult your course syllabus for exact grading details
