What is GPA?

Grade Point Average (GPA) is a measure of academic achievement calculated as an average of grades.

GPA Categories

Low: <2.0
Average: 2.0-2.9
Good: 3.0-3.5
Excellent: ≥3.6

Academic Impact

A higher GPA improves scholarship opportunities and graduate school prospects.

How This Tool Works

This GPA calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale to calculate your Grade Point Average. The calculator computes your GPA by dividing the total grade points earned by the total credit hours attempted.

The GPA Formula

GPA = Total Grade Points / Total Credit Hours

Where:

  • Grade Points = Credit Hours × Grade Value (e.g., A = 4.0)
  • Total Grade Points = Sum of all course grade points
  • Total Credit Hours = Sum of all course credit hours

Standard Grading Scale

This calculator uses the following grade values:

Letter Grade Grade Points Percentage Range
A 4.0 93-100%
A- 3.7 90-92%
B+ 3.3 87-89%
B 3.0 83-86%
B- 2.7 80-82%
C+ 2.3 77-79%
C 2.0 73-76%
C- 1.7 70-72%
D+ 1.3 67-69%
D 1.0 63-66%
F 0.0 0-62%

Important Considerations

While GPA is a valuable academic metric, it has some limitations:

  • Different institutions may use slightly different grading scales
  • Some programs weight advanced courses differently
  • GPA doesn't reflect the difficulty of your course load
  • Your GPA is just one component of your academic profile
  • Employers and graduate schools consider other factors like experience and recommendations

For comprehensive academic planning, consult with your academic advisor who can consider your specific program requirements and career goals.
